PUTRAJAYA: A new committee, the Malaysia Games Council, has been formed to oversee and administer Sukma (the Malaysia Games), which of late has seen numerous controversies over the selection of events and its rules.
The Sukma supreme council, which was the controlling body for the biennial Games, will now take on an advisory role.
The decision to form the new committee was made by the Cabinet Committee for Sports chaired by deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Thursday.
The new committee will comprise officials from the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), National Sports Council, Sports Ministry, the host state, the immediate past host and the future host of the Games.
This committee will make the final decision with regards to the events, the rules and also be empowered to decide on any issues that may crop up in regards to the Games.
Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said said after the meeting here that there was a need to revamp the way Sukma was being run and it was decided that the new committee would take stock of the situation and act accordingly.
The Sukma Supreme council is made up of chairmen from all state sports council's and is chaired by the Sports Minster.
NSC director general Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz, meanwhile, said that the separate roles for the new committee and the supreme council had to be worked out.
“We will also need to look at the composition of officials in the new committee and define its tasks. But it is this new committee that will run Sukma from now on,” he said.
