PETALING JAYA: High jumper Lee Hup Wei and bowler Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman are the favourites to win the 2005 Milo Sportsboy and Sportsgirl awards inPutrajaya on Monday.
Hup Wei will compete with fencer Mohd Kaharuddin Ashah and chess player Zarul Shazwan for the Sportsboy award. Hup Wei is the clear favourite, having won the goldmedal at the National Schools (MSSM) Championships in Penang last year. He is now the country’s top high jumper, having set a personal best of 2.20m at the inauguralMalaysian Education Institute of Sports (Sipma) competition in Seremban in September.
Besides Siti Safiyah, the other three challenging for the Sportsgirl award are S. Aruna (netball), Chui Lai Kwan (swimming) and Michelle Koh (golf).
The 16-year-old Siti Safiyah is the best bet for the award. Last year, she beat a world class field to capture the Malaysian Open crown. She also set the record for being the youngest winner of the championships.
Other awards to be given out include the most promising sportsboy and sportsgirl, children with disabilities, the best boy and girl in sports not under the MSSM programmeand the best male and female teacher.
The nominees for the awards were named during a press conference at the Education Ministry here yesterday.
The Education Ministry and Nestle Products Sdn Bhd are jointly organising the awards ceremony.
