Athletes start arriving in batches

ALOR STAR: An air of festivity prevails in Kedah as 13,048 athletes and officers from 16 contingents started arriving in batches at their respective camps for the 11th Malaysia Games (Sukma). 

Although the Games officially starts on Wednesday, the squash event kicks off at Muadzam Shah Sports Complex today. 

The city and hosts districts were decorated with 10,000 buntings, a few hundred billboards and hundreds of lighted boxes to evoke the mood. 

Streamers bearing Sukma Kedah mascot, the eagle, hangs on every other lamppost on highways and byways leading to the Sukma venues. 

State Youth and Sports committee chairman Othman Aziz said about RM5mil was spent on publicity and promotional events, adding that sponsors had contributed about RM10mil. 

Othman said 40,000 booklets had been published for the event, adding that tens of thousands of flyers were also printed.
