PETALING JAYA: Project 2010-12 men’s singles players Chong Wei Feng and Tan Chun Seang were first round casualties in satellite tournaments this year.

The humiliation, however, has fuelled their determination to make amends by defending the boys’ singles gold medal for hosts Kedah at the badminton competition, starting on Friday at the Kedah BA hall in Suka Menanti, Alor Star.

Kuan Beng Hong had won the gold medal at the Negri Sembilan Sukma two years ago.

The duo will be joined by two other singles shuttlers, Lok Chong Chieh and Tan Aik Quan, and doubles pairs Khoo Chung Chiat-Au Kok Leong and Lim Kee Shen-Lim Kim Hwa in the team event.

After crashing out in the quarter-finals in his debut Games two years ago, the 19-year-old Wei Feng is out for redemption.

“I have improved a lot since coming under the charge of Rashid Sidek last year. My problem is that I am not very consistent. In the satellite tournaments this year, I lost in the first round at Indonesia but I did well in Vietnam (third round),” said Wei Feng.

On the challengers at the Kedah Sukma, Wei Feng named several players under Rashid’s group, including Liew Daren of Kuala Lumpur, Lim Kenn of Selangor, Mohd Hazwan Jamaluddin of Negri Sembilan and Sabah’s Beryno Wong.

Chun Seang has a second mission – to go one step better in the team event.

“I will be happy if one of us is able to win the singles title for Kedah. But I am determined to make up for my failure in the team event,” said the 19-year-old.

Two years ago, Chun Seang lost to Raymond Steven in the decider in a final tie against Kuala Lumpur. Kedah lost 2-3.

“I failed to help Kedah win their first ever team gold. This time, I will be out to win every point for my team.”
