LAWN bowler Affendy Tan Abdullah suffered a setback to his hopes to make the quarter-finals of the men's singles competition when he lost for the second time in his group at the State Lawn Bowls Centre yesterday.

Affendy was beaten 0.5-1.5 (7-7, 6-8) by Northern Ireland's Martin McHugh and is now in third place in Group B behind Kelvin Kerkow of Australia and Juni Peter of Papua New Guinea.

Affendy has only won two of four matches. He was beaten by Kerkow on Sunday.

Manchester Games women's singles gold medallist Siti Zalina has the better chance to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Zalina bounced back from Monday's shock defeat by Elizabeth Spence of Zimbabwe to beat Maureen Burns of Kenya 2-1 (10-5, 7-8, 2-1) yesterday.

Zalina has won two of three matches thus far and should advance from Group A together with current leader Spence.

Both Malaysian lawn bowlers will play their final group match today. The top two bowlers from each group in the preliminary round move into the quarter-finals, which will be played in the evening.
