SCOTLAND poured cold water on a hot streak by the Malaysian men's lawn bowls pair at the State Lawn Bowls Centre yesterday.

After the gold medal-winning effort by Nor Hashimah Ismail, Nor Iryani Azmi and Azlina Arshad in the women's triples event the previous day, hopes were high on Fairul Izwan Abdul Muin and Safuan Said to continue with their winning ways in Melbourne.

But the duo, who have won three of their four group matches, were beaten 2-1 in the quarter-finals by Paul Foster-Alex Marshall.

It was a nail-biting match with Malaysia taking a slim 8-7 lead over the Scots in the first game. But Foster-Marshall came back stronger and won the second game 8-7. In the tie breaker, the Malaysians were beaten 0-2.

With the defeat of the men's pair, Malaysia's challenge has been reduced to the men's and women's singles events.

With two more group matches to play, Affendy Tan Abdullah and women's defending champion Siti Zalina Ahmad are still in the running for a place in the quarter-finals.

Yesterday, Affendy defeated Ieremia Leautuli of Samoa 2-1 (7-12, 9-4, 2-10) while Siti Zalina was beaten 1-2 by Malawian Zelda Humphreys (16-3, 2-14, 1-2).
