EACH year, a new beauty queen enters the F1 fray as its ambassador with the main task of helping sell tickets for the race at Sepang.
This year, reigning Miss Indonesia Nadine Chandrawinata steps in to take over from India beauty Celina Jaitley and the 21-year old rising star is ready to woo more Indonesian fans to Sepang.
“I hope to continue the good work of (former F1 ambassador) Artika (Sari Devi) and get more people especially in Indonesia to be interested in this great sport,” says Nadine, whose debut film Realita Cinta & Rock'n Roll is due for release in Indonesia next month.
An ardent fan of Fernando Alonso, the 174cm tall Nadine said it was an honour to be associated with the world's biggest motor racing series and that she was excited at the prospect of meeting the 2005 world champion and the other F1 drivers at the upcoming race at Sepang F1 Circuit.
Sepang will host round two of the 2006 FIA F1 World Championship from March 17-19. The new season opened last weekend with the Bahrain Grand Prix in Manama. The race was won by Alonso while Michael Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen came in second and third respectively.
“I have heard great things about the Sepang F1 Circuit and my dream is to drive a real racing car on this great F1 track,” said Nadine, who, however, acknowledged that it would be unlikely that she would get a chance to drive a F1 car around the circuit.
“An F1 car? Wow! That would really be something. But, I don't think it is going to happen. Nobody lends an F1 car. Do they?” asked Nadine, an established model who drives a 7-series BMW back home and has two other cars, a Toyota Vios and a Chevrolet.
As the F1 Ambassador, Nadine will make appearance at road shows organised by Sepang International Circuit (SIC) in Indonesia to help hype up the excitement among the fans and woo them to come to Malaysia to catch the 2006 Petronas Malaysian F1 Grand Prix.
Nadine was crowned as Miss Indonesia Pageant on July 29 last year. She is also an ambassador for BNN (Badan Narkotika Nasional), Culture and Tourism, Clean Up Indonesia, and a Honourable Member for Komisi Nasional Perlindungan Anak ( KOMNAS Anak).
Nadine, an advertising graduate who speaks fluent German and English, will also be attending the race at Sepang, and like her predecessors, will be mingling with the race fans at the stands to enjoy the thrills and excitement of the eighth edition of the Petronas Malaysian F1 GP.
Before Nadine, SIC had used the services of Bollywood star Celina Jaitley, Indonesia's beauty queen Artika and Malaysia's Ning Baizura as their F1 ambassadors in boosting their ticket agents.
The appointment of Nadine, who will represent Indonesia in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant in Santiago, Chile in May, is a key strategy for SIC, who are targeting to double their sale of 2,987 tickets from the Indonesian sector last year.
Along with Singapore and Thailand, Indonesia has always been a key target market for the SIC.
