TURIN: The 20th Winter Olympics opened on Friday to be greeted by plummeting temperatures and rising anger over the suspension of 12 athletes and the first drugs banishment of the showpiece.
A worldwide television audience of two billion people and a crowd of 35,000 in the Stadio Olimpico, who braved the freezing weather, watched Italian president Carlo Azeglio Ciampi declare the Olympics officially open.
