KUALA LUMPUR: National junior exponents Ryan Chong Wy Lunn and Wan Nur Latifah Mohd Yusoff chose to compete in the senior category of the NSC-Milo national inter-club championships at the Gymnasium II of the National Sports Complex in Bukit Jalil here yesterday.
And their decisions turned out to be wise ones. Both Ryan and Nur Latifah emerged as the champions in the Open men's flyweight and women's finweight events respectively.
The 17-year-old Ryan of the Bangsar Taekwondo Fitness Centre beat Mohd Zaki Sarbudin of Germilang Taekwondo Academy in the final.
“It is more competitive in the senior category,” said the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) student.
“I hope to get a national senior call-up and challenge for a place in the team for the Doha Asian Games (next December).”
Also a BJSS student, 17-year-old Nur Latifah of the Gemilang Taekwondo Academy beat teammate Nur Hazwani Wahab for the title.
Her win in the senior category certainly made up for her disappointing debut in the recent Manila SEA Games.
“I lost in the first round against a fighter from Laos. I went to the Games with high hopes and it was so disappointing,” said Nur Latifah, who chose to skip her SPM examinations to compete in the Games.
“I have certainly regained my confidence with this win. I will continue with my training and try to make the squad for Asian Games.”
Meanwhile, Gemilang emerged as the overall champions in the two-day championships with a haul of 8-12-9. Bangsar Taekwondo Fitness finished second on 7-2-2, followed by Koryo TKD Academy on 5-4-9.
