THE national jersey Harimau Malaya (Malayan Tiger) donned by the Malaysian contingent during Sunday's opening ceremony received much praise from various quarters, Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said said.

She said many who met her had nothing but admiration for the new Malaysian uniform.

“The uniform national jersey which is being worn for the first time is very practical. Like yesterday, it drew wide attention and Malaysia's contingent could be identified from afar,” she told reporters yesterday.

She said the jersey would also be used from now on at other international events including the next Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia in March.

The national jersey, which has black tiger stripes motif on a yellow background, was unveiled by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak on Nov 14 for use at the Manila SEA Games.

Previously, Malaysian athletes at international meets wore different jerseys, although all were based on the colours of the Jalur Gemilang (Malaysian flag). – Bernama
