Romano more passionate about game after kidnap

MEXICO CITY: A two-month kidnap ordeal has given Ruben Omar Romano even more love for football, the coach of Mexican club Cruz Azul said on Friday.

Police freed Argentine Romano from kidnappers on Wednesday night, 64 days after he was seized near the club’s training ground in the south of Mexico City.

He said he now hoped to lead Cruz Azul, who in his absence have enjoyed one of their best starts to a season in years, to the championship.

“Football is my life and I now have more passion for the sport than ever before,” Romano told a news conference.

Romano thanked several people for their support during his ordeal, especially former Argentina captain Diego Maradona.

The 47-year-old Romano will feature on Maradona’s weekly TV programme ‘The Night of the 10’ on Monday.

Romano, 47, spent two months blindfolded in a house in a crime-ridden residential neighbourhood.

“The best thing for me is to go back to work and be with the people I love,” he said. “Today I have been reborn.”

Assistant coach Isaac Mizrahi took control of the side in Romano’s absence.

Cruz Azul, who top the league with 21 points, faced Dorados of Sinaloa yesterday.

Romano said he would sit on the bench to assist Mizrahi on Saturday before resuming full control on Monday. – Reuters
