ECUADOR'S Jefferson Perez won the first gold medal of the 10th World Championships when he retained his title in the men's 20km walk yesterday as Olympic champion Justin Gatlin was his confident self after storming into the 100m semi-finals.
Spaniard Francisco Javier Fernandez, the pre-race favourite, led for most of the race before finishing second behind Perez, just as he did in Paris two years ago. Spain's Juan Manuel Molina took the bronze.
