SINGAPORE: Singapore is one of the world's sporting minnows but the tiny South-East Asian nation has embraced its hosting of next week's vote on the 2012 Games as a golden chance to shine under the Olympic spotlight.
While the five cities bidding to host the Games have waged fervent campaigns to show the world what they can offer, Singapore has similarly prepared a charm offensive for the International Olympics Committee (IOC) 117th session.
Singapore Airlines hostesses have been training the hundreds of volunteers enlisted to help make the event run smoothly, giving them tips about etiquette, culture awareness and grooming.
A major tourism drive has also been launched to take advantage of the estimated 5,000 visitors who will be in Singapore next week for the vote.
The star power descending on Singapore will ensure even those not interested in sport focus on the nation next week.
English football captain David Beckham and his Real Madrid teammate Raul are expected to be in town, too. – AFP
