Streakers banned from future games at stadiums

FRANKFURT: The streakers who entered Confederations Cup matches have been banned from attending future games in the respective stadiums with additional sanctions likely, football officials said on Monday.

Organising committee spokesman Gerd Graus said the two men could be banned from stadiums all over Germany.

“That is not a joke but a serious matter to which we have to react,” Graus said. “We are doing our best to prevent such incidents in the future but there is no 100% safety.”

Markus Siegler, the spokesman of the ruling body FIFA, said that “the measures must be drastic to act as a deterrent in the future.”

The first streaker appeared in Cologne at Saturday's match between Germany and Tunisia, running onto the pitch and embracing goalkeeper Jens Lehmann in an effort to win a 500-euro bet with friends.

On Sunday in Hannover, another streaker entered the pitch during the Brazil vs Mexico game, with Brazil player Emerson in hot pursuit before the man was held by security personnel. – dpa
