Still recovering from the second of two hip operations which kept him off the tour for seven months, and which sent his world ranking plummeting to 97, the 28-year-old Brazilian was a pale shadow of his former self as he slumped to a 6-3, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 defeat to Spain's David Sanchez.
