PUTRAJAYA: Athletes who smoke should tell the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) which will arrange counselling to help them kick the habit, OCM deputy president Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan said.
If they come to us voluntarily we will arrange counsellors for them. But because quitting the habit may result in other problems, we will have to manage the process properly, he told reporters after a discussion with Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Azalina Othman Said in her office yesterday.
He said OCM wanted to handle this issue in a manner that people would understand the harmful effects of smoking and the benefits of quitting.
We want them to be educated about this and to voluntarily kick this habit because this way is sustainable, he said.
Dr Jegathesan also said sports leaders, team managers and coaches should set a good example and not light up in front of their athletes. Bernama
