KUALA LUMPUR: The hosting of the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games by Australia could well set an example for future hosts of the games, especially with regard to expenditure for infrastructure.
Despite promising state-of-the-art facilities and venues for the Games, the Australian government are only spending a fraction of what Malaysia spent when hosting the 16th Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur back in 1998.
