Five-year jail terms handed to W-Cup rioters

BAMAKO: A court in Mali sentenced three people to five years’ jail on Tuesday for their part in riots that swept through the West African nation’s capital after a World Cup qualifier against Togo last month.

“This sentence must be exemplary and must teach a lesson,” prosecutor Elhadj Mahamane Maiga told the court in the capital Bamako. The three defendants, who already had criminal records, were charged with destroying public property.
