BADEN (Switzerland): Swiss football star Hakan Yakin was convicted of speeding and could go to prison, a justice official said on Wednesday.
Yakin was found guilty on Tuesday and would have to pay a hefty fine, said Stefan Kalt, an official in the district of Baden in northwest Switzerland, to Radio Zuerisee.
However, citing legal confidentiality rules, he did not give the amount of the fine or say if Yakin would face prison time which was possible under Swiss traffic laws, Kalt noted.
The fine was expected to be large because of regulations that allow judges to take into account the income and wealth of the defendant during sentencing.
The 27-year-old international midfielder, who plays his club football for Galatasaray in Turkey, was caught on camera last summer on a highway in Wuerenlos, near Zurich, driving his Porsche Carrera at speeds in excess of 200kph . The speed limit was 120kph.
Yakin left German club Stuttgart two weeks ago to join Galatasaray on loan until the end of the season. Galatasaray has the option of signing Yakin on a longer contract when the loan period ends. AP
