KANGAR: Perlis heaped more misery on bottom-placed Sabah with a 5-0 thrashing at the Stadium Utama here last night.
Sierra Leone midfielder Mohd Lamin Conteh, with a brace, national player Mohd Ivan Yusoff, Zambian forward Zacharia Simu Konda and Manzoor Azwira scored in the goal-fest to secure all three points for the Northern Lions.
The defeat leaves the Rhinos with some dismal statistics – not a single point, zero goals scored and a hefty 10 goals conceded after three matches.
To compound their misery last night, midfielder Madzalan Emoi was also shown the red card for kicking out at Perlis' Feriza Ismail in an off-the-ball incident eight minutes before halftime.
The home side needed just three minutes to surge ahead. Simu Konda managed to drag away three Sabah defenders before teeing up an unmarked Lamin Conteh.
And the Sierra Leone midfielder unleashed an unstoppable shot past Sabah goalkeeper Shamsul Sabtu from just outside the penalty box.
Perlis could have gone into the dressing room with an even more comfortable lead at halftime if only Feriza and Zacharia's attempts had not gone inches wide of Shamsul's right post.
But Mohd Ivan Yusoff eased the Malaysia Cup champions' nerves just five minutes into the second half.
Latching onto a Lamin through ball, Ivan beat the offside trap and coolly slotted the ball past Shamsul.
Ivan returned the compliment six minutes later, putting Lamin through to score his second goal of the night in similar fashion.
Zacharia maintained his rate of scoring in every match so far by hitting Perlis' fourth goal in the 65th minute. It was his fourth goal of the season.
Manzoor Azwira rounded up the scoring for Perlis seven minutes before the end to leave the shell-shocked Sabah facing a crisis so early in the season.
