Telekom Malaysia is the new major sponsor for FAM

KUALA LUMPUR: Telekom Malaysia Bhd has been announced as the new major sponsor for the FA of Malaysia's (FAM). 

The amount of sponsorship was not disclosed but it is learnt that Telekom have pledged RM8.5 million per year. 

The number of years which Telekom intends to work with FAM was also not disclosed. 

The announcement of Telekom as the new sponsor ended speculations over which corporation was going to take over the major role of funding professional football in the country. 

The FAM had to source for a new major sponsor as the Malaysian government will have to abide by the World Health Organisation's (WHO) world wide ruling to ban tobacco and alcohol sponsorships and advertisements for sports events from 2006 onwards. 

Currently, Dunhill are the major sponsor for the FAM. They have been the major sponsors since 1987.  

From 1996, Dunhill had pledged a yearly sponsorship of RM30 million to FAM. This deal expired last year. 

Under a new sponsorship contract they agreed to sponsor FAM until the end of next year for a sum of about RM10 million per year. 

However, the Dunhill logo, which all teams playing in tournaments organised by FAM under the previous contract had to display on the jerseys, will no longer apply. 

Malaysia Airlines, Genting Bhd and Adidas (M) Sdn Bhd who have had ties with FAM have also signed on to play a bigger role. 

However, the amount of sponsorships by these companies are not known.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Super League Sdn Bhd (MSL) was officially appointed as the official marketing arm of the FAM at a leading hotel here last night. 

MSL will be in charge of sourcing for sponsorships for FAM.  

FAM deputy president Tengku Mahkota of Pahang, Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said: “Until the end of last year our arms were tied. We could not source for new sponsors because we still had obligations with Dunhill. 

“FAM are very thankful to Dunhill for helping to improve the standard of football in the country. 

“We now look forward to working with our new partner Telekom, as well as Malaysia Airlines, Genting Bhd and Adidas who have been with us for a number of years.” 

Meanwhile, the MSL chairman Datuk Abdul Aziz Rahman said: “We are still discussing with several companies regarding sponsorship.  

“The corporation with the highest amount of sponsorship will be the title sponsor and their logo will be displayed on the jerseys of the Premier League and Super League teams. 

“Dunhill are the biggest contributors but they are no longer allowed to put their logo on the jerseys.” 

He also disclosed plans to hold activities before kick-off to improve attendance.
