BALTIMORE (Maryland): Teenage golfing phenom Michelle Wie is looking to play in all four of the women's tour majors after accepting an invitation on Monday to compete in the LPGA Championship.
We could not be happier having Michelle Wie in our field. This is what ladies golf is all about the best of the best competing in one field, tournament founder Herb Lotman said.
The 2005 LPGA Championship is scheduled for June 9-12 at the Bulle Rock Country Club in Havre de Grace, 50 kilometres northeast of Baltimore.
Wie competed at last week's men's Sony Open but missed the cut and finished near the back of the pack.
This is the first year amateur's like Wie will be permitted to play in the LPGA Championship. Organisers boosted the field to 150 players from 144.
Wie has an exemption to compete in the US Women's Open and has accepted an invite to take part in the another major in Palm Springs, California on March 24-27.
She is expected to get an exemption to the Women's British Open and the LPGA Championship would be the fourth major. AFP
