MELBOURNE: Seven-time European money list winner Colin Montgomerie was yesterday confirmed to play in the European Tour-sanctioned Heineken Golf Classic at Royal Melbourne next month.Â
Organisers said the rejuvenated Scot would join an international field including South African Ernie Els, Australians Adam Scott and Greg Norman, Englands Nick Faldo and Denmarks Thomas Bjorn.Â
With the addition of Colin Montgomerie to a field that was already very strong, the Heineken Classic can lay claim to being by far the strongest international golf event in this country, promoter Tony Roosenburg said in a statement.Â
Montgomerie sank the putt which handed Bernhard Langers European side a crushing victory over the Americans in the Ryder Cup in Michigan last September. He holed a testy three-foot par putt to complete a one-up victory over David Toms that clinched what became an 18 1/2-9 1/2 win over the Americans.Â
Roosenburg said negotiations were under way to add Australian Masters champion Richard Green to the field for the Feb 3-6 event. AFPÂ
