LONDON: Newcastle manager Graeme Souness has cancelled any official Christmas party for his players in an effort to keep them out of trouble.
English Premiership players are regularly exposed being worse for wear during the holiday season and Souness, brought in by Newcastle in September to tighten things up following the sacking of Sir Bobby Robson, wants to avoid any pranks.
They'd planned going to Edinburgh but I'm not having any of that, he said.
I can't stop them having a quiet drink together but there's no official party. Word would leak out where they were going and all sorts of people would be up there waiting for them.
The Magpies have only won one of their last seven Premiership games and Souness thought there was nothing to celebrate.
He has introduced Sunday morning training and fines who players who turn up late, and even banned players from sightseeing on a recent UEFA Cup trip to Greece. AFP
