Three Cub Prix winners among challengers for Asean honours

PETALING JAYA: The three winners of the Petronas Sprinta Malaysian Cub Prix Championships will be among the Malaysian riders challenging for honours in the Yamaha Asean Cup Championships, which will be held at the Shah Alam Go-Kart Circuit from Dec 3-5.

They are K. Sivanesan (expert), Mohd Yusri Ibrahim (novice) and Mohd Zamri Baba (Wira Under-21). Also in the fray is Ahmad Fazli Sham, the winner of the Underbone 125cc class of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championships (ARRC) this year.

Up against the Malaysian riders are a selection of the best from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and the Philippines.

Among the more familiar names from Indonesia is 13-year-old boy wonder Doni Tata Praditya, who won the novices class in the championships last year. He went on to make a tremendous impact in the Underbone 125cc class of the ARRC this season.

Thailand will be represented by riders with even more impressive credentials. Expert riders Decha Kraisart, Chalermpol Polamai, Preecha Yongsawangarun, Worawut Phuttho and Kittipong Chumpol used to be the top riders in the Underbone 125cc class of the ARRC.

For Sivanesan, it will be the first time that he will be racing against foreign riders.

“Previously, I was with a different team and I never had the opportunity to follow a full season of the FIM Asia Road Racing Championships,” he said.

“Moving to Shell Harian Metro Maju and signing up with Yamaha this year has paid off for me and I emerged as the expert's class champion. I hope to cap the season with another title.”

Mohd Zamri is looking forward to testing his mettle on a different circuit.

“I have raced against riders like Doni Tata Praditya in the ARRC. But the races were on permanent circuits, including those in Sepang and Sentul (Indonesia),” he said.

“We have not measured each other's capabilities on a smaller temporary circuit. The difference in racing environment will be an interesting challenge.”

Entry to the championships is free. Besides the race programme, spectators will also be treated to a number of other exciting activities, including Xtreme Riding and Super Jump Show performed by Japanese stunt riders.

There will also be a MotoGP booth and a Yamaha Mini Motoshow.

Yamaha MotoGP rider Norifumi Abe of Japan will make his appearance as a special guest of the event.
