ALOR STAR: Defending champion Lee Chong Wei is the notable absentee from the Malaysian Satellite badminton tournament, which will be held at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium from Nov 23-28.

Also missing from the Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) list of 58 players for the tournament is Kuan Beng Hong, whom Chong Wei beat 15-7, 15-9 in the final last year.

In their absence, Lee Tsuen Seng, who did not participate last year, will spearhead the Malaysian challenge in the men’s singles of the Asian international tournament.

In the men’s doubles, the Malaysian entries include newly-crowned world junior champions Tan Boon Heong-Hoon Thien How.

Last year’s winners were Gan Teik Chai-Koo Kien Keat. But the pair have been split up and for their challenge this time, Teik Chai will partner Mohd Zakry Latif while Kien Keat will team up with Chan Chong Ming.

The favourites to win the title, is the newly forged partnership of Choong Tan Fook-Chan Chong Ming. The seasoned shuttlers in the national senior team were the runners-up in the recent China Open.

The championships, which have new title sponsors in Magnum, will also feature shuttlers from Indonesia and Thailand.

The previous sponsors were Luster.
