PENANG: Football fans here can catch the excitement of the Manchester United-Arsenal clash and watch the live telecast on a giant screen at The Star’s “The Big Showdown” party in Gurney Plaza’s al-fresco area tonight.
The event starts at 8pm and the crowd can be assured of a good time, with games and fun activities right up to the kick-off at 11pm. There are also numerous prizes to be won.
In addition to enjoying the fun and excitement, fans get to do their bit for charity as well. Fifteen Miss Pesta 2004 contestants, mostly college students, will be walking around the party area, carrying donation boxes for the Darfur Children’s Fund.
Contestant Winnie Tan, 20, called on those attending the party to donate with a big heart and help feed the hungry children of Darfur.
“We are glad to play a role in helping the unfortunate children and I hope we will be successful in persuading the crowd to help them too,” she added.
Tan said that apart from being at the party to help raise funds, the girls were also keen football fans.
“We have been following the English Premier League and most of us are keen supporters of Manchester United,” she said.
Lucky draws will be held during the party, with return air tickets to London for two as the grand prize. The tickets are sponsored by the Royal Brunei Airlines.
Other prizes include handphones and jerseys, sponsored by Tiger Beer, Digi and Pallas. Golden Screen Cinemas will also be sponsoring cinema passes for lucky draw winners.
To take part in the lucky draws, just cut out the entry form in yesterday’s StarMetro North and bring it along to the party.
The Big Showdown is The Star’s way of thanking loyal readers of its special football pullout.
