Relief for national shuttlers as BAM lift freeze

KUALA LUMPUR: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have lifted the freeze on national players competing in international tournaments. And the first assignments for the players will be the Open tournaments in China, Singapore and Taiwan.

Yesterday, the BAM's coaching and training committee led by chairman Datuk Nadzmi Mohd Salleh, approved the selection of the national players by their respective singles and doubles chief coaches Misbun Sidek and Yap Kim Hock.

The China Open is from Nov 9-14. It will be followed with the Singapore Open (Nov 15-21) and Taiwan Open (Nov 30-Dec 5).

The BAM had frozen all international participation for two months after the Athens Olympic Games debacle, where they failed to win a single medal.

At the same meeting yesterday, the BAM also finally announced a date for a one-day workshop to discuss the failure in Athens.

The workshop will be held on Nov 8. Dr Leonard De Vries, the president of the Malaysian Association for Physical Education, Sport Science and Fitness, will handle the workshop.

“The objective of this workshop is to get ideas and opinions on the best way for BAM to chart the future,” said Nadzmi, who is also BAM president.

Nadzmi said they were also looking at running two separate programmes simultaneously in future.

“We have identified two programmes for players to win honours at SEA Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and the Olympic Games. There will be players and coaches for a short-term programme from 2006-2008.

“We will also identify players and coaches for a longer term programme for 2010-2012.

A performance director is expected to monitor the two programmes.
