PALM SPRINGS (California): Michelle Wie, who turned 15 on Monday, will join all four major winners, Annika Sorenstam, Meg Mallon, Grace Park, and Karen Stupples at this week’s Samsung World Championship.

South Korean-American Wie is paired with Sorenstam and is the lone amateur in the elite 20- player field of the US$825,000 tournament.

Wie, who is remarkably mature for her age, said she enjoys the challenge of competing against the best female players and doesn’t mind missing the odd day of school to play golf.

“I mean, I’m not stupid enough that I would not enjoy myself coming out here,” she said on Wednesday, the eve of the tournament. “I’m not really that stupid. If I’m not enjoying myself, I wouldn’t be playing.

“I’m having a great time. I really enjoy coming out here, and it’s kind of fun, missing school.”

Wie will be just the sixth amateur to play in the event. The last was Grace Park in 1998. – AFP
