Italian smashes 24-hour-old lap record to take pole position

SEPANG: Italian MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi showed just why Yamaha forked out a king's ransom to get him to ride for them this year with a magnificent qualifying run in the Marlboro Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the Sepang circuit yesterday.

The Gauloises Fortuna Yamaha rider, who is reportedly on an eight million euro contract (not including bonuses), took his YZR-M1 bike to pole position with a new all-time qualifying best time of 2:01.833.
