MONACO: Mexico's Ana Guevara won the women's 400m at the World Athletics Finals yesterday, ending Olympic champion Tonique Williams-Darling's unbeaten streak and avenging her loss to the Bahamian at the Athens Games.
Williams-Darling had not lost a race, or even a heat, since March and was looking for an 11th straight race victory. But Guevara, the reigning world champion and runner-up behind Williams-Darling in Athens, went out quickly and won in 50.13. Williams-Darling could not match the early pace, fell away in the stretch and finished sixth, more than a second back.
