Beryno stuns Daren to enter final

JOHOR BARU: East Zone champion Beryno Wong of Sabah delivered a stunning blow in the boys’ Under-18 singles semi-finals when he upstaged Bukit Jalil Sports School’s (BJSS) Liew Daren on the penultimate day of the 100PLUS POWER National Junior Badminton Circuit Grand Finals at the Johor BA Hall in Larkin yesterday. 

Beryno, who squeezed into last four after finishing second in his group, came from behind to defeat Daren 14-17, 15-7, 15-5. 

The Sabah player will face another BJSS player, Chong Wei Feng, in the final today. 

Wei Feng, unbeaten in the preliminary round, notched his fourth straight victory in the Grand Finals when he defeated his schoolmate Chong Li Qun in another three-set thriller. The Kedah-born Wei Feng, won 15-7, 6-15, 15-5. 

The final between Wei Feng and Beryno will mark the second time the duo will be facing each other in this tournament. 

Wei Feng had beaten Beryno 15-9, 15-12 in a group tie on Monday. 

In the boys’ Under-16 singles category, Malacca's Lee Kaw Guan defeated Kedah’s Lee Wooi Cheat 15-8, 15-8 in the semi-finals to stom into the final against Zairul Hafiz. 

Zairul, who lost to Kaw Guan in the group stage on Monday, defeated BJSS teammate Chan Kwong Beng 9-15, 15-12, 15-5 in the other semi-final tie.
