JOHOR BARU: Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS) boys’ Under-18 singles shuttlers Liew Daren, Chong Li Qun and Chong Wei Feng breezed through their opening matches on the first day of the 100PLUS POWER National Junior Badminton Circuit Grand Finals at the Johor BA Hall in Larkin yesterday.
In the Group A preliminary matches, Daren powered past North Zone runner-up Chang Hun Pin 15-6., 15-3 while Li Qun swept past South Zone winner, Muhd Redza Hassan, 15-3, 15-4.
Despite the losses, Hun Pin and Muhd Redza, who showed much promise in the earlier stages, still have a chance to make the semi-finals.
The top two players from each of the two groups will advance to the semi-finals.
In Group B, Kedah-born Chong Wei Feng, did not hold back against schoolmate Loo Yik Xiang in their opening match. Wei Feng was in dominant form and cruised to a 15-5, 15-8 victory.
In the other Group B tie, East Zone champion, Beryno Wong of Sabah, recovered from an early setback before sinking Penang’s Lee Hock Lai in a titanic battle that lasted 75 minutes. Beryno defeated Hock Lai, the North Zone champion, 6-15, 17-15, 15-4 to move a step closer to the semi-finals.
In the girls’ Under-18 singles, BJSS made a clean sweep in this age group when their players won all four opening matches. Chong Sook Chin, Yee Qui Hsiang, Julia Wong Pei Xian and Goh Liu Ying were all smiles as they walked away winners on the first day of the grand finals.
In Group A, Sook Chin defeated Selangor’s S. Premalatha 11-7, 11-6 while Qui Hsiang received a walkover from Kedah’s Chow Kar Yuen. In Group B, Julia blasted past S. Premalathi of Perak 11-1, 11-1 while Liu Ying needed 50 minutes to tame Kedah’s Yeoh Phaik Wee 11-13, 11-9, 11-1.
