PETALING JAYA: Penang's Lee Hock Lai, the North Zone boys’ Under-18 singles champion, got off to a smashing start on the opening day of the Stage Two 100Plus Power National Junior Badminton Circuit at the Selangor BA Hall yesterday.

The 17-year-old Hock Lai defeated Bukit Jalil Sports School's (BJSS) Loo Yik Xiang 15-8, 15-11 in the first round.

Three other BJSS players – Chong Wei Feng, Liew Daren and Chong Li Qun – also reached the second round.

Wei Feng defeated Kelantan’s How Sheng Boon 15-12, 15-4; Daren beat Sabah’s Beryno Wong 15-7, 15-11 while Li Qun outclassed Penang’s Chang Hun Pin 15-9, 15-4.

But Tay Chuen Jein, the other BJSS representative, was a first round casualty. He lost 13-15, 14-17 to Selangor's Shahrizan Sidek.

In the boys’ Under-16 singles category, all five BJSS players – Chan Kwong Beng, Lok Chong Chieh, Lim Fang Yang, Zairul Hafiz and Vountus Indra Mawan – sailed through their first round matches.
