PETALING JAYA: The Ho brothers will spearhead Malaysia's challenge in the Autobacs Asia Cross Country Rally from Aug 7-13.

Francis and his younger brother Jacky are among the five Malaysian teams taking part in the gruelling five-day rally from Bangkok to Viangchan in Laos and back to the Thai capital.

Francis will be driving the Toyota Hilux with Jacky as the co-driver.

Last year, the brothers emerged champions in the Taiwan 4x4 Challenge. In the 2002 Autobacs Asia Cross Country Rally T2 class, they were placed second.

The other Malaysian teams competing are Tan Chin Long-Ng Haw Hann (Mitsubishi Pajero), Lee Yu Leng-Tey Teng Seng (Toyota Hilux), Tan Kian Peng-Chen Sing Chong (Toyota Hilux) and Wong Sing Cheong-Teoh Yon Long (Mitsubishi Pajero).

With a field of 70 teams from Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea and Japan, the Asia Cross Country Rally has made its mark as the premier four-wheel drive cross-country event. It is sanctioned by the International Automobile Federation (FIA).

The seven-leg rally covers 2,763km of rugged terrains and it will be flagged off in Bangkok on Aug 7, stopping at Phetchabun and Nong Khai village before crossing over to Viangchan in Laos.

The convoy will then return to Thailand, stopping over at Nong Khai again, Khon Kaen and Pak Chong before proceeding for Bangkok.

The first prize is worth 120,000 baht (RM13,230).
