Drechsler pulls out of Olympics

BERLIN: Germany’s reigning Olympic long jump champion Heike Drechsler has pulled out of the Athens Games next month because she believes she is not performing well enough.

Drechsler, who won the event in both Sydney and at the 1992 Olympics, has only jumped 6.39m this season, far from the 6.70m minimum distance set by the national federation. Her personal best is 7.48m set in 1992.

“I have to be realistic and realise my form at the moment is not at the required level,” the 39-year athlete said after a training session at Karlsruhe, in the south west of the country, on Wednesday.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think I’m capable of winning a national or an international title. Therefore, I’ll have to cross out my ambition of an Olympic title or medal.”

Drechsler, who said in March she would retire after the Aug 13-29 Olympics, said she would be competing in several international meetings till the end of the season. – AFP
