Kedah's Noor Shahiza dedicates gold to sister

Sukma 2004Negri Sembilan May 28 - June 6

SILAT exponent Noor Shahiza Azizan of Kedah left the Sukma scene yesterday on a high note.

And she could not hide her joy after scoring a 5-0 win over Kelantan’s Nik Nurliana Nik Li in the Putri Class A final at the Seremban Municipal Council Hall.

The 20-year-old Shahiza not only retained the title but also had a wish come true.

The gold meant a lot to the full-time silat exponent. She needed one to dedicate to her younger sister, Rozilawati, who was unable to compete in the Negri Games because she had to attend national service.

“It’s double joy for me. I’m glad and very happy to retain the title. But more importantly, I wanted the gold to dedicate to my sister. This medal is for her,” said Shahiza.

“She (Rozilawati) was not able to be here because of national duty. I am sure she would have been a medal winner too if she were here. I am leaving Sukma with the knowledge that someone in the family will carry on a tradition in the sport.”

The father Azizan Ismail, an army pensioner, is also a silat exponent.

“I get full backing from my dad. The Kedah Sports Council have also played a big role in my silat career,” said Shahiza.

For her win, Shahiza will get a RM3,000 reward from the Kedah government. She also received RM500 immediately after her win over Nik Nurliana.

“There will be no more Sukma for me and I have to look at bigger things. I want to be a world champion,” said Shahiza, a bronze medallist in the World Championships in Penang in 2002.

She also competed in the Asia Pacific Championships but failed to win a medal.

“I still have a lot to learn. It requires a lot of discipline and dedication. I am enjoying it very much as it has not only made me a better person but also allows me to bring glory to my state and country.”

On the final day of the silat competition, Kedah ruled the arena.

They won four more final bouts through Siti Jameelah Mohd Japilus (Putri Class B), Mohd Salim Umat (Putra Class H), Abdul Ghofur Mohd Daya (Putra Class J) and Nik Arrffi Mat (Putra Class G).
