Sukma 2004Negri Sembilan May 28 - June 6
KEDAH, after pulling out from hosting the 7th Sukma in 1998, has stated it is now ready to stage the 11th edition of the biennial sports carnival in 2006.
Youth, Sports and Entrepreneurial Development Committee Chairman Dr Shuib Saedin said the state government was confident of Kedah's capability in staging the Games.
He said existing sports venues and infrastructures in Kedah were adequate for Sukma.
“Maybe several venues need to be upgraded,” he told reporters in Seremban yesterday.
Dr Shuib said facilities at Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) campus in Sintok would be used as venues for the games.
“UUM campus will be turned into the games village for Sukma 2006,” he said.
Dr Shuib said the Kedah government planned to build two new sports complex in the state – an aquatics centre and a hockey stadium.
To prepare for Sukma 2006, Kedah had sent a team of 20 volunteers from UUM to study the running of the 10th Sukma here.
“They will learn from any technical glitch or other shortcoming here (10th Sukma), to ensure it does not recur when Kedah hosts the Games,” said Dr Shuib.
Kedah cited financial reasons as among the reasons it pulled out from hosting the 1998 Sukma, a task taken over by Selangor. – Bernama
