Thaksin set to use public funds to take up 30% of Reds shares

BANGKOK: Thailand is close to sealing a deal to buy a stake in English Premier League side Liverpool, and government money could be used to fund the purchase, a spokesman said yesterday.

Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said on Monday after talks with Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry that he was on the verge of buying at least 30% of the club, in a deal worth some US$100 million.
