LONDON: Former Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa defender Gary Charles pleaded guilty on Wednesday to hitting a woman during a drunken rage.
Charles, 33, appeared in Derby Crown Court and acknowledged attacking a 30-year-old woman in Alfreton, Derbyshire, last July.
He pleaded guilty to one count of common assault and was released on conditional bail until sentencing on May 6.
Charles, who also played for Derby County, Benfica and West Ham, apologised in person to the woman.
I would just like to say I am sorry to you, its all I can say, he said from the dock. It is all a bit embarrassing.
Judge Andrew Hamilton told the woman: It was an appalling bout of loutish, drunken behaviour which was no doubt very unpleasant for you. I hope that his apology will go in some way to make up for his deplorable behaviour.
Charles was jailed for four months in January for a series of drunk driving offences. AP
