LONDON: Former Manchester United star George Best was granted a divorce yesterday from his wife Alex, adding yet another turbulent chapter to the ex-footballers life.
Neither partner attended the brief hearing at the Family Division of the High Court in central London, where the uncontested hearing took little more than two minutes to be completed.
Best, considered one of the most naturally gifted footballers ever to play the game, has battled against alcoholism in the three decades since he quit the sport.
Now 57, the former Northern Ireland winger attempted to stop drinking after undergoing a liver transplant in July 2002, but eventually relapsed, putting his marriage under severe strain.
Best and his 32-year-old wife split last September. She revealed on live television that they were divorcing when she appeared on a reality TV show featuring British celebrities stranded in the Australian jungle.
Best was one of the stars of the Manchester United team that won the European Cup in 1968, and his combination of talent and good looks made him Britains first superstar player. However, he walked out on United at the age of 26, and his career was soon over. AFP
