KUALA LUMPUR: Swimmer Daniel Bego did not give his best in the South-East Asia inter-club age-group championship but still managed to break a meet record in the boys' Under-14 event on the opening day at the Kuala Lumpur Swimming Complex in Cheras here yesterday.
The Miri-lad, who represented Ikan Bilis Club clocked 55:30 in the 100m freestyle, erasing the old mark of 55:54 set by Su Jhi Rong of Singapore at the same venue two years ago.
Daniel, the Vietnam SEA Games gold medallist, was not surprised by his feat.
“I did not go all out as I am keeping my best for the Singapore Open two weeks from now, where I hope to win a place in the Athens Olympics.
“However, I am happy to have started the meet with a meet record. I hope to break meet records in the other three events I will be taking part in - 50m, 200m and 400m freestyle,'' said Daniel.
Meanwhile, meet records fell like tenpins, with 16 marks bettered on the first day, with Singapore clubs bagging most of the golds and records.
Three events were postponed yesterday to today because of heavy downpour and lightning.
