KAJANG: Rashid Ismail kept his cool to edge Malaysia's top ranked golfer P. Gunasegaran in a sudden death playoff to win the Professional Golf Classic 1 tournament at the Impian Golf and Country Club here yesterday.

The contest for the title went down to the wires after the two players completed three rounds with a total of 14-under 202.

RASHID: Edged P. Gunasegaran in a sudden death playoff to capture the Professional Golf Classic 1 tournament.

Ismail who trailed leader Stevan Tan by four strokes going into the final round, carded a seven-under 65 to tie with Gunasegaran, who shot a 67.

In the playoff on the 18th hole, Ismail's second shot rolled to within inches of the hole for an easy tap-in while Gunasegaran was unlucky to see his shot land about 15m from the cup.

“When I hit my second shot close to the pin, I knew it was going to be my title. Guna was under pressure to hole out from about 15m,” said Rashid.

“It's a good start for me as the Classic is my first tournament this season. It has been a year since I last won a titles,” said Rashid, who won RM8,000.

Steven shot a two-over 72 for a total of 207 for third place.
