MILAN: Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, owner of European champions AC Milan, on Friday called a nationwide fraud investigation into Italian football a step towards a “police state”.
Finance police searched 51 clubs on Thursday, including all the top teams in Italy, taking away thousands of documents as magistrates dramatically widened their probe into suspected financial wrongdoing in the country's favourite sport.
