PORT KLANG: Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Hishammuddin Hussein praised the Malaysian women’s badminton team who qualified for the Uber Cup finals in Jakarta from May 7 to 16.
The team qualified after defeating India 4-1 at the Asian Zone qualifying round at the Kuala Lumpur Badminton Stadium in Cheras on Friday.
“I congratulate both the men's and women’s badminton teams for qualifying for the finals, and am especially proud of the women’s team as this is the first time they qualified for the Uber Cup finals on merit and this is an achievement I have been waiting for in a long time,” Hishammuddin told a press conference after attending the opening of the Bayuemas Oval cricket ground here yesterday.
On another matter, he said his ministry had come up with a blueprint to revive conventional and traditional sports such as cricket, sepak takraw and top spinning.
The move, aimed at encouraging Malaysians to lead a healthy lifestyle, would see greater allocation from the ministry towards providing facilities for the public to rekindle interest in such sports.
He also said his ministry’s sports division was restructured recently.
“A lot of our allocation would go into our restructured sports division which will focus on providing sports facilities for all,” Hishammuddin said.
