KUALA LUMPUR: Ten Malaysians, including five athletes, will get an opportunity to be part of the first-ever global Olympic torch relay run leading to the Athens Olympic Games from Aug 13 to 29.
South Korean company, Samsung, one of the 11 Olympic Games official partners, invited Malaysia to be part of the relay by selecting a national hero to participate in the run, held a month before the Games.
Malaysia can pick five renowned sportsmen, sportswomen or sports activists to represent the country in the relay that will be run across 33 cities in five continents.
The Malaysian campaign is part of the company's Sama-sama Samsung campaign that was launched recently.
The five other runners would be picked from Samsung Famemas supporters group who would be required to write a short essay on why they feel that they deserve to represent Malaysia in the event.
A total of 10,000 people will take part in the relay. Australia's 400m Sydney Olympic gold medallist Cathy Freeman will be the first runner. Bernama
