MELBOURNE: She cannot defend her Australian Open crown but Serena Williams’ thoughts are still Down Under as she awaits delivery of one of the most unlikely fashion items of all time.
“She called the other day and she is like 'bring me some Uggs’,” laughed elder sister Venus, referring to this season’s must-have accessory – cloddish sheepskin boots made in Australia.
“Ugg mania” ripped through the United States after Oprah Winfrey gave a pair to everyone in her studio audience. Before that, actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts were spotted wearing them, and Sex in the City actress Sarah Jessica Parker ordered a special pair in ruby red.
Uggs have flat soles and a shapeless, retro look. They have been called an “anti-fashion answer to pointy stilettos”, yet Serena wants them.
“Yeah, she put her order in,” giggled Venus at Melbourne Park where she is preparing for next week’s Australian Open, the grand slam tournament her sister pipped her to in last year’s final.
“Mostly she’s harassing mom about it. So she wants her Uggs and we are missing her.”
Traditionally, the footwear popularised by surfers in the 1970s, come in sand colour, but to please the fashionistas in the US, new colours are being added all the time – baby pink and blue most recently.
Serena, a six-times grand slam winner, is fortunate she has a big sister Down Under to grab a pair for her. The chic and shaggy sheepskin boots have sold out across the US as retailers were caught cold by the rush.
American magazines report there will not be more until February at the earliest – and as late as June for the most popular styles and colours. – Reuters
