Despair and hope over the French Grand Prix

PARIS: The troubled French Grand Prix was plunged into more controversy on Friday when crucial cash help was withheld from the July 4 event before race organisers insisted it was still on course to take place.

The French Motorsports Association (FFSA) said that the necessary financial backing had been secured for the Formula One race but that optimism was soon dashed when the regional authority, where the Magny-Cours track is based, then rejected its proposed budget.
