‘Viet kieu’ Noel just happy to turn out for motherland

IT doesn't matter that Noel Huynh Mai Huynh lost on the tennis court this week at the SEA Games because she already won the toughest match of her young career: getting the chance to play.

The 18-year-old, born in the US territory of Guam, is the first “Viet kieu,” or overseas Vietnamese, to receive dual citizenship from the communist government in order to compete for Vietnam. It follows a long, hard journey for her whole family – first as Vietnamese, then as Americans.
