Azrihanif easily clears first hurdle

KUALA LUMPUR: Asian Schools champion Azrihanif Azahar led the charge of the national juniors when he won his opening encounter on the first day of the 100PLUS POWER National Junior Badminton Circuit Grand Finals at the Kuala Lumpur BA Stadium in Cheras here yesterday. 

Selangor-born Azrihanif, representing the Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), defeated Chin Shi Weng of Negri Sembilan 15-1, 15-1 in the boys Under-18 singles category.  

Azrihanif later joined forces with Mohd Hafiz Shahruddin to beat Selangor’s Firmanshah and Jai Effendy 15-4, 15-7 in the doubles.  

The 17-year-old Azrihanif has been drawn in Group 8A along with schoolmate Muhd Syafiq Jamaluddin and KL’s Raymond Steven. The BJSS player, however, fell to Raymond, who took 59 minutes to win 15-2, 9-15, 15-7.  

Other BJSS players who form the core of the national junior squad, that won their matches yesterday included Lok Chong Chieh, Chan Kwong Beng, Liew Daren, Mohd Hafiz Shahruddin and Tan Chun Seang.  

In the girls Under-18 category, BJSS Loo Hooi Shan, who hails from Kelantan, defeated schoolmate Huong Yeu Leung 15-9, 15-3.
